In Ancient kemet it was believed that every night Khepera would push the sun (Ra) down into the underworld and every morning the sun(Ra) would again emerge and travel across the sky. His name comes from the Egyptian word Kheprer ‘To become’
Young dung beetles having been laid as eggs within the dung ball, emerge from it fully formed therefore Khepera also represents self-creation and rebirth, he was specifically connected with the mythical creation of the world.

The image of the scarab conveyed ideas of transformation, renewal and resurrection, the wings are a metaphysical form of the vortex which represents constant flow. Mummy cases of the dead were nearly always ornamented with scarabs, usually one of these beetles with spread wings was painted on the mummy cases directly over the breast of the dead as a form of protection in the underworld.
